šŸ¤ŸšŸ½Learning ASL

In my mid-50s, I never imagined Iā€™d embark on a journey to learn a new language, but here I am, diving into American Sign Language (ASL) to better communicate with my deaf grandson. His mother, my daughter, is a single mom raising two young boys, and her strength amazes me every day. Despite the challenges, sheā€™s always been there, supporting her children through every struggle. Watching her dedication inspired me to take action.

Learning ASL at this stage of my life has been anything but easy. There have been moments of frustration, self-doubt, and countless hours spent practicing the intricate signs. Yet, my love for my grandson and the desire to connect with him on a deeper level make every struggle worth it. Each sign I learn feels like a small victory, bringing me closer to bridging the gap between us.

This journey isnā€™t just about communication; itā€™s also about personal growth. Learning ASL has pushed me passed a comfort zone, challenging me to stay patient, resilient, and open to belief it can be accomplished. It has reinvigorated my spirit, reminding me that growth and learning are lifelong processes, no matter your age.

A surprising tool in my journey has been TikTok. What started as a way to keep up with my grandsonsā€™ interests quickly became an invaluable resource. By posting videos of my learning progress, I am able to reinforce the material while also sharing it with my family and others, creating a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

I also found great ASL apps that make it easy to study while commuting or on the go, like The ASL App, ASL Dictionary App, Hand Talk App, and Signing Savvy App. Youtube is another social media resource that makes it easy to learn at your own pace. I really enjoyed the LearnHowtoSign Youtibe Channel with Meredith a state certified ASL teacher. She is amazing!

These tools have been a game-changer, allowing me to practice anytime, anywhere.

Through these resources, Iā€™ve been able to learn and share my progress with my grandson in a fun and engaging way. This journey to learn ASL has been a powerful reminder of the strength of love, perseverance, and the capacity for growth at any stage of life. Itā€™s never too late to embark on a new adventure, and this one has brought me closer to my family and to myself in ways I never expected.
